Internationally awarded Hungarian film director of Romanian origin dies at 92

Cannes and Venice awarded Hungarian film director Miklós Jancsó, who was of Romanian origin, died last Friday (January 31) at 92.

Born in 1921 in Vac, in Hungary, from a mixed Hungarian – Romanian family, Jancsó got a degree in law at the University in Cluj – Napoca in Romania in 1944. After fighting in the Second World War and brief period as a war prisoner, he chose to join the Film and Theater Academy in Budapest, and graduated with a degree in film making in 1950.

He received the Canned Awards for Directing in 1972 for the film Még kér a nép/Red Psalm, and was five times selected in the competition for a Palme D' Or. He was awarded the Gold Lion at the Venice Film festival in 1990 for his entire career.
