Investor worry sends Romanian currency to new low
Romania's currency the RON reached a new low today (Friday, July 6 ), when the Romanian Central Bank official rate was of RON 4.5142 per EUR, breaking the RON 4.5 threshold. The previous official rate was of RON 4.4796 to EUR 1 on Thursday.
On the money market, the rate reached RON 4.52 per EUR 1, fueled by the worries coming from the political scene. In a couple of hours, the country's Parliament will vote on suspending President Traian Basescu. The political quarrel and the recent changes in the country's Parliament, plus the echoes from abroad, all asking for political calmness and criticizing the infringements of the law and a potential attack on democracy sent worrying signals to financial markets.
The Bucharest Stock exchange indexes went slightly down during the day on Friday, all with slips below 1 percent.
