Additional Romanian film enters Berlinale 2018 section
Lemonade, the feature film debut of Romanian director Ioana Uricaru, has been selected in the Panorama section of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).
This is the third Romanian feature selected in one of the Berlinale competitions this year. Adina Pintilie’s debut Touch Me Not was selected in the official competition, while the documentary Fotbal Infinit/ Infinite Football of Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu has been selected in the Forum section. Two shorts produced in Romania are also competing in another section of the festival.
Lemonade is produced by Palme d’Or winning Romanian director Cristian Mungiu at Mobra Films. It tells the story of the single mother Mara, who marries an American while in the U.S. on a temporary work visa. Mara is played by Romanian actress Malina Manovici, who was also cast in Mungiu’s 2016 film Graduation.
The film Graduation earned Mungiu a Best Director prize in 2016 in Cannes, a distinction he shared with Olivier Assayas. It was Mungiu’s third prize at Cannes, after the Palm d’Or he won in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, and the Best Screenplay award in 2012 for Beyond the Hills.
The Panorama section aims to present fresh artistic visions, “the courage to be different, a desire for the unfamiliar, a profound historical awareness or pioneering personalities.” It presents new works by established directors, but also debut films and discoveries.
The Berlinale takes place between February 15 and February 25.
