Romanian president: Ukraine-Russia negotiations should result in restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity

06 May 2022

Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia should result in the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity, "the only acceptable option being a solution in line with international law and Euro-Atlantic security interests," Romanian president Klaus Iohannis said on May 6 during a joint press conference with his Lithuanian counterpart, Gitanas Nausėda.

President Iohannis also said that Romania supports the sanctions adopted against Russia.

The two heads of state met in Bucharest on Friday, May 6. The discussions focused mainly on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, "which generated the worst security crisis in decades, with multiple implications," and ways to support the refugees fleeing the war.

"I also reiterated that Romania supports a thorough investigation by the International Criminal Court into all war crimes committed by Russian troops," the Romanian president said after the meeting.

He also said that Moldova needs "substantial direct financial assistance" to manage the influx of refugees and strengthen its energy security and implement reforms. In this context, Romania will host in Bucharest, together with Germany and France, the second edition of the Support Platform for Moldova conference.

"Regarding the applications for accession to the European Union of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia, I reiterated that Romania fully supports their integration into the Union," president Iohannis also said.

The Romanian and Lithuanian presidents also discussed the current security situation in the region and ways to eliminate the European Union's energy dependence and mitigate the impact of high energy prices on consumers.
