Five-year jail sentences for 47 Romanian border policemen and head of customs
The High Court recently sentenced Aurel Anea, the former head of the Siret customs, to five years in prison for bribery and creating an organized criminal group.
It also sentenced 47 other border policemen to five years in jail, according to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), which investigated the case.
Between September 2010 and January 2011, some 62 border police demanded, received or accepted over EUR 809,000 in bribes to allow smuggling, mainly cigarettes from Ukraine, according to anticorruption prosecutors.
Aurel Anea received from several custom officials EUR 5,400, between December 2010 and January 2011.
