Jail sentences may be cut by 10% in Romania due to bad detention conditions

04 November 2016

Romania’s Justice Ministry wants to reduce the prison sentences by 10% as compensation for the improper detention conditions in local penitentiaries.

It published yesterday evening the draft law amending and supplementing the law on the execution of prison sentences. The bill grants a reduction of three days for each 30 days executed, reports local News.ro.

Justice minister Raluca Pruna argues that the Romanians jail system is facing an “overcrowding situation”. The draft law will be put up for public debate.

In 2012, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled against Romania because of overcrowding and poor detention conditions. ECHR ruled that these problems are structural in the prison system in Romania.Since then, several Romanian convicts who went to ECHR got money compensations that must be paid by the Romanian state.

This year, the convicts from several local prisons rioted and asked for the justice minister’s resignation.
