Japanese culture enthusiasts can enjoy a special Noh theater show staged by elite artists at the National Theater in Bucharest (TNB) this June.

The Yamamoto Noh Theatre company, which comprises 20 artists, will perform the Adachi-ga-hara (The Demon of Adachi) play on the Bucharest stage on June 16. The show will be led by masters Yamamoto Akihiro, Umewaka Motonori, Moriya Yoshinori, all holders of the Highly Important Intangible Heritage of Japan title, reads a TNB statement.

Adachi-ga-hara is a classical play from the Noh repertoire. The Noh theater is a Japanese theatrical form and one of the oldest extant theatrical forms in the world.

Adachi-ga-hara belongs to the category of plays with demons from the classical repertoire of the genre. The play tells the story of a group of Buddhist monks, who, in their wanderings through the Adachi region, end up spending the night in the remote cottage of a poor old lady. She laments over her cruel fate that forced her into a secluded life. Shortly afterward, however, the guests discover that the old woman they sympathize with is not exactly what she seems to be.

The show will last about 90 minutes, with a break, and will have Romanian translation. Tickets cost RON 30 (EUR 6.6), RON 60 (EUR 13.3), and RON 80 (EUR 17.7).

Yamamoto Noh Theater will also perform at the State Philharmonic in Sibiu on June 19, within the Sibiu International Theater Festival. More information here.
