Romanian president goes to Germany to receive award for promoting democratic values
Romanian president Klaus Iohannis will be in Munich on June 1-2, where he will receive the Franz Josef Strauss-2018 award from German foundation Hanns Seidel.
The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 2, at the Royal Palace in Munich - Allerheiligen-Hofkirche, according to a press release from the Romanian Presidency.
The Romanian president will receive this award for promoting, constructively and visually, throughout his entire political career, the democratic values, a united society, and confidence in the European project. The Franz Josef Strauss award comes with a prize of EUR 10,000, which Klaus Iohannis will donate to a Romanian NGO that carries out projects in areas such as health, education and social assistance.
The award has been conferred since 1996 to several personalities who have made a difference in politics, business, society and culture, promoting peace, freedom, respect for the law, and democracy. Among the winners of the prize are former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, former President of the United States of America George H. W. Bush, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and former US Secretary of State, diplomat Henry A. Kissinger.
