Largest heroin capture in Romania after 1990
Romanian law enforcers seized 333 kilograms of heroin they found in 2 trucks that tried to cross the border to Hungary through the Vama Petea crossing point in Satu Mare, northern Romania.
This is the largest heroin seizure in Romania after 1990. The second largest took place in 2005, when authorities found 256 kg of heroin.
The drugs came most likely from Afghanistan and were hidden in containers. These were dipped in paprika and pepper so that they were not detected by sniffer dogs, according to Daniel Horodniceanu, chief prosecutors of Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).
The heroin had a purity of 62-65%, and it was worth EUR 8 million on the wholesale market. The drugs’ retail value would amount to EUR 40 million.
The heroin was supposed to get to the Netherlands. The prosecutors held four people, two Romanians and two Turks.
