Largest suspension bridge in Romania to open June 27
The bridge over the Danube in Brăila, the largest suspension bridge in Romania and the third in Europe, is set to be inaugurated on June 27 on the Măcin route after a year and a half of delays. The second route, Jijila, is expected to open later.
"We are pushing and assisting the entrepreneur so that June 27 will be the day when we officially cross on the suspended bridge over the Danube in Brăila/Galați - Tulcea," state secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Ionel Scrioșteanu, wrote on Facebook, cited by Digi24. He also mentioned that 14,000 tons of asphalt are being poured on the bridge alone.
The June 27 date for the inauguration on the Măcin route was previously mentioned by transport minister Sorin Grindeanu.
The initial completion deadline was December 2021. It was then postponed to December 2022, and further delayed to summer for the shorter Măcin route.
The length of the suspension bridge is 1,974 meters, and the length of the main road Brăila-Jijila is 19 kilometers. The connecting road to DN 22 Smârdan-Măcin has 4.328 kilometers. The cost of the project amounts to EUR 500 million.
On March 15, 2023, the National Company for the Administration of Road Infrastructure announced on its Facebook page that the physical progress of the bridge works is 93.4%, and the progress of the connecting roads is 60%, with the overall physical progress of the entire project being 91.9%.
