Romania’s ruling party leader not willing to give up power

18 September 2018

The president of Romania’s ruling party - the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Liviu Dragnea, said on Monday, September 17, that he is interested only in carrying out his party’s governing program and not in giving in to some people’s “whims”.

This was his answer when journalists asked him if he was willing to take a step back from the helm of his party, as some of the party’s regional leaders asked him to, according to local Mediafax.

Several leaders of PSD county organizations, including deputy prime minister Paul Stanescu, former prime minister Mihai Tudose and Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea, asked Dragnea to step down as president of the party.

The PSD leader said the matter would be settled in the next meeting of the party’s Executive Committee. He added that his position has often been questioned by people outside the party and suggested that president Klaus Iohannis may be behind the efforts to remove him from the party’s helm.
