Local authorities build elevator to boost visits for one of Romania's best preserved medieval fortresses

27 August 2014

Tourists visiting the Rasnov Fortress, one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Romania, will be able to reach the fortress by elevator, starting next year. The local authorities in Rasnov, a small town close to Brasov, 180 kilometers North of Bucharest, are currently working on building the elevator, which, they estimate, will be finished in December this year.

The investment in this project is estimated at some EUR 3.5 million, almost half of which is covered by non-refundable European funds, according to the project’s description.

The local authorities estimate that this elevator, which will make it easier for tourists to visit the fortress located on a hilltop near the city, will increase the number of tourists by at least 20%, according to local news station Digi24.

The elevator will have a length of 165 meters and an elevation of 94 meters. It will be able to make 12 trips an hour with 30 people on each ride.
