Romanian liberal leader makes criminal complaint against PM for usurpation of authority

18 May 2018

The leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Ludovic Orban filed a criminal complaint against prime minister Viorica Dancila for usurpation of authority.

The complaint is related to the Government’s secret memorandum to move Romania’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Orban said he filed this complaint as a citizen and that he could not remain idle while PM Viorica Dancila and Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea were making decisions that destroy Romania’s credibility abroad and endanger the country’s fundamental interests, local Mediafax reported.

Ludovic Orban accuses Dancila and Dragnea of revealing secret information, usurpation of authority and of refusing to inform the president on the memorandum to move the embassy to Jerusalem. He asked the prosecutors to investigate all aspects related to this memorandum.

The General Prosecutor’s Office sent Orban’s complaint to the Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).

PSD leader Liviu Dragnea commented that the liberal leader’s initiative was a foolery and a coup attempt and accused president Klaus Iohannis of being behind this initiative. Most PSD leaders and ministers accused the liberal leader of serving occult interests.

Liviu Dragnea announced in April that Romania would move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, following a similar move by the US. The Government said it approved a memorandum to analyze the implications of such a decision. Dragnea and PM Dancila made a visit to Israel and met PM Benjamin Netanyahu immediately after the announcement. President Klaus Iohannis said he wasn’t informed about this visit and accused Dragnea and Dancila of damaging Romania’s foreign relations.
