Lycamobile virtual mobile operator to enter Romanian market

11 September 2014

Lycamobile, the largest mobile virtual network operator in the world, will soon enter the Romanian market, via a partnership with Cosmote, soon to be Telekom Romania, according to Economica.net.

Via the partnership, Cosmote will improve coverage of Romanians who live abroad, in the countries where Lycamobile operates, including Spain, Italy, UK and Germany. Lycamobile was licensed in Romania in July 2014, and serves over 30 million users in 17 countries. It will offer voice and data services, both pre-pay, and based on subscriptions.

A mobile virtual network operator offers mobile communication services without owning the wireless network infrastructure, but rather by entering an agreement with an existing operator on the market, to access their network. In Romania, only Telekom Romania, RCS&RDS and 2K Telecom have accepted hosting virtual operators.

Lycamobile was founded by Subaskaran Allirajah in 2006, after founding Lycatel. Lycamobile, initially developed for the expatriate communities in Europe, now operates in 17 countries across Europe, Australian and the USA markets with the largest international footprint of any international MVNO.
