"Made in Romania" law could trigger infringement on Romania

23 November 2016

Romania runs the risk of having an infringement procedure started by the European Commission because of the law providing that at least 51% of the products sold by large retailers must be made in Romania, said the agriculture minister Achim Irimescu, reports local News.ro.

The law was passed by the Chamber of Deputies in June this year and the President promulgated it in July. However, the law doesn’t apply yet.

According to Irimescu, the future Parliament could introduce amendments to the Law 321 on trading food products. The minister said that things are complex, and that it’s not only the fault of hypermarkets, which want to buy cheaper products regardless of where they come from, or only the fault of the producers, or consumers.
