Romania’s Competition Council is analyzing the transaction through which Belgian retailer Mega Image plans to take over two NIC supermarkets in Bucharest.

Local investors Nicolae and Alexandra Ghinea own the NIC stores, which are among the oldest supermarkets in Bucharest. The stores are located in some of the city’s higher-end residential areas. The company, which has 5 stores in Bucharest, had a turnover of EUR 13.3 million last year.

Mega Image is the fastest growing retailer in Romania. Last year it took 19 stores of the 22 units operated by local meat producer Angst. It wanted to buy 20 stores, but the Competition Council approved the taking over of 19 units.

The Belgian retailer has a network of 433 stores in Bucharest, Constanta, Ploiesti, Brasov, Targoviste and other cities under the brands Mega Image, Shop&Go, AB COOL FOOD, and Gusturi Romanesti.
