Minister: Romania - Hungary relations to become a model
The relations between Romania and Hungary need to become a model for other countries in the region, said Romanian foreign affairs minister Teodor Melescanu (picture, left).
Melescanu met yesterday with Hungarian foreign affairs minister Peter Szijjarto in Budapest.
“This is the first step in a process through which we want to make relations between Romania and Hungary to become a model,” said the Romanian official.
Further development of economic relations between Hungary and Romania is a priority for the government led by Viktor Orban, said Peter Szijjarto.
Hungary is one of Romania’s traditional economic partners and has permanently occupied a top position in Romania’s foreign trade. According to data provided by the Romanian Embassy in Budapest, the trade with Hungary has been growing steadily since 2009, with the exception of the 2012/2013 period, but the trade balance has been net favorable to Hungary every year.
In the first ten months of 2016, the Romanian-Hungarian trade value reached EUR 6.5 billion, of which Romania’s exports reached EUR 2.5 billion and the imports amounted to EUR 4 billion.
