Modern retail represents 1.1% of shops in Romania, but makes half of the total turnover
Romania has over 122,000 shops, but only 1.1% of them are modern retail units, such as hypermarkets, supermarkets and discounters, according to a research from retail tracking firm Vektor MF, writes local Mediafax.
The number of shops in Romania will most likely go down, as more will shops will close than new one will open. The expansion of neighborhood shop networks, and supermarkets will continue to impact small local entrepreneurs who live off their small neighborhood shops.
Traditional retail has 86,200 units, followed by HoReCa – 34,500 units, and modern retail – 1,353 shops.
All retail spaces cover some 6.8 million sqm, out of which 44.5% by traditional retail, 30.5% by HoReCa, and 25% by modern retail formats.
However, despite having just 1.1% of the stores on the market, the 12 largest retail networks bring about half of the total retail turnover in Romania.
