Romanian companies have also started to be interested more in operating in the Republic of Moldova, with the main areas of interest being infrastructure, energy, trade and distribution.

“I meet investors from Romania almost on a daily basis. Either Romanian investors wishing to expand to the Republic of Moldova or Romanians sent by foreign companies in Romania looking to expand abroad,” said Lazar.

Producers in the auto industry showed interest in relocating to the Republic of Moldova, according to Lazar.  Draexlmaier Automotive has already done so.

Petrom, BCR, BT Leasing, Rompetrol and Romstal are among the main Romanian investors in the Republic of Moldova.  The country had a GDP contraction of 6.5 percent last year but saw an economic increase of 5.6 percent in the first half of this year. The country expects an economic increase of 4 to 5 percent for this year.
