Moldovans rule Romanian as their official language
Romanian has become the official language in the Republic of Moldova, after an unprecedented decision from the country's Constitutional Court. So far, Moldovans have been speaking the Moldovan language with a Latin graphy.
The Republic of Moldova's presidency argued that the Romanian nation is organized in two Romanian states, Romania and the Republic of Moldova, and that the scientific name of the official language in the republic of Moldova is a certainty. According to the Sciences Academy in Moldova, the official language is Romanian, as the expression included in the Constitution “Moldovan language based on Latin graphy” is semantically equivalent with Romanian.
The language was renamed Moldovan under the Soviet rule, to further separate the country from Romania. The Communist Party in the Republic of Moldova opposed the recent change.
Romanians and Moldovans do speak the same language, with only slight regional variations, similarly to the variations appearing in language throughout Romania's areas as well.
Moldova was part of Romania until 1940, when the Soviet union took it over. The country declared its independence in 1991.
Romania also has a historic region called Moldova, located in the North Eastern part of the country, and adjoining the Republic of Moldova, but separated by border.
There have been recent talks about union between the two Romanian countries, with Romanian President Traian Basescu officially showing his support of such a move. Romania is part of the European Union, and the Republic of Moldova is not yet part of the European block.
