More foreign tourists in Romania's Constanta port as cruise ships avoid Odessa
Romania stands to gain as cruise ships will no longer stopover in the Odessa port after the plane downing in Ukraine and as the UE is looking on imposing new sanctions against Russia. Romania already registers a 20 percent increase in the number of tourists who come to the country via cruise ships.
Last year, 54,000 passengers visited the port of Constanta, and this year already 64,500 passengers arrived in the seaside city, and spent some EUR 6 million locally, according to Corina Martin, president of the Seaside - Danube Delta Association, quoted by Capital.
Many of the cruise ships which now opt to stop in Constanta prolong their stay by about a night, and others even double their initially planned stay. American, French, Italian and German passengers are in the top of foreigners who arrive via these cruises.
