More than 12 million Romanians received their health insurance cards

22 January 2015

The Romanian Post has distributed 12.26 million health insurance cards issued by National Health Insurance House of Romania (CNAS), according to an official announcement. This means that 93% of the Romanians who have state health insurance got their cards via post.

“A 7% rate of return for the health insurance cards distribution is something that any private operator would assume. And we achieved this despite the rigours of the contract in terms of delivery method and of the covered areas, which include hard-to reach rural regions,” said Irina Purcaru, operations and commercial relations manager for the Romanian Post.

The National Health Insurance House commissioned the Romanian post to deliver 13.2 million cards, which means that about one million Romanians haven’t received them for different reasons. People who changed their address or couldn’t be found to be handed the cards must pick them up from the territorial units of the Health Insurance House where they are registered or from their family doctors.

Health insurance cards become mandatory starting February 1. This means that Romanians need to have these cards to get medical consultations and prescriptions.

The highest number of cards was sent for delivery in Bucharest, more than 1.22 million, followed by Prahova county, with 511,000 cards, and Timis county, where 438,000 cards were sent.

The Romanian Post started delivering the cards on September 19, 2014. The total value of this contract is some EUR 8.3 million.
