Romanians have spent in 2013 a total of EUR 20.6 million on purchases made using mobile devices, according to payment processor NETOPIA mobilPay.

Of the total amount, EUR 13.8 million were spent using smartphones and tablets, while EUR 6.8 million were text message (SMS) transactions.

Around 40 percent of these payments were processed by NETOPIA mobilPay.

“Six percent of the total online card payments processed by the company last year, with a value of EUR 4.6 million, were performed via smartphones and tablets. In the case of transactions processed via micro payments by phone (SMS), they amounted to a value of EUR 3.4 million last year, about half of the total market,” reads the company’s statement.

This year, NETOPIA mobilPay expects to see two times more online payments via mobile devices.
