New BBC TV series could be filmed in Romania

14 November 2014

Dickensian, a new TV series produced by BBC, whose action is placed in the 19th-century London, might be filmed in Romania, according to British filmmaker Tony Jordan, quoted by Variety.com.

Jordan, who created several various famous TV productions such as Life on Mars and Hustle, said he may have to shoot his 20-part series Dickensian in Eastern Europe because he can’t find studio space in the U.K.

“I’m not sure if I would want ‘Dickensian’ to be in Bulgaria or in Romania; it just doesn’t feel quite right. It should be in the U.K.,” he said, according to Variety.com.

Traditional British studios, such as Pinewood and Shepperton, are already booked in the short-term as the U.K. production business enjoys a boom period driven by the recent extension of tax credits to high-end television shows. For this reason, many British producers were forced to seek alternative filming spaces, such as warehouses and former factories, as it is the case for the 24: Live Another Day series, shot in the Gillette building in West London.

Tony Jordan has written the storylines for the 20 episodes, in which characters from various novels of Charles Dickens will be brought together. Every episode will have 30 minutes.

This would be the second international TV series shot in Romania after History channel’s Hatfields & McCoys miniseries, which was shot near the Romanian city of Brasov.
