More than 8,000 passenger cars were sold in Romania in May 2014, which is almost 60 percent more than in the same month last year, according to data released by the Romanian Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA).

This was the eleventh consecutive month with growing car sales. In the first five months of the year, sales were up 30 percent to more ta 30,000 units. During the same period, used car registries in Romania declined by 6 percent, to 81,000 units.

Romanian brand Dacia remains the undisputed leader of the local car market, with 9,800 units sold in the first five months, 48 percent more than in the same period of last year. Volkswagen sold almost 3,000 cars, and saw a 9 percent increase, while Skoda sold 2,800 cars, some 47 percent more than in the first five months of 2013. Ford had a 63 percent increase in sales, to 2,066 units and surpassed Renault to take the fourth place. Renault is fifth, with 1,920 cars sold.
