New edition of Making Waves: New Romanian Cinema festival in NY this December

The 11th edition of Making Waves: New Romanian Cinema will take place in New York from December 1 to December 8.

The festival will bring some of the newest Romanian films to New York, with screenings being scheduled to take place at Jacob Burns Film Center.

The event’s program includes two titles selected in the official competition at Cannes, namely Cristian Mungiu’s Graduation and Cristi Puiu’s Sieranevada, as well as two other films – Adrian Sitaru’s Illegitimate and and Radu Jude’s Scarred Hearts, which won prizes at the Berlin and Locarno film festivals.

The Romanian comedy Two Lottery Tickets, directed by Paul Negoescu, is also part of the lineup, as well as short film A Night in Tokoriki directed by Roxana Stroe, Alexandru Belc’s Cinema, Mon Amour, and Bogdan Mirica’s Dogs.

This year’s guest country is Poland, which will be represented by Tomasz Wasilewski’s United States of Love.

Guests of this year’s festival include actors Vlad Ivanov (Dogs, Graduation), Maria Dragus (Graduation), Alina Grigore and Robi Urs (Illegitimate), and Julia Kijowska (United States of Love). Corian Suteu, Romania's current culture minister, founder of the Making Waves festival and long-time promoter of Romanian Cinema in the U.S., will also attend the festival.
