Romania’s Sinaia mountain resort inaugurates new gondola lift
Romania’s Sinaia mountain resort will inaugurate its new gondola lift starting Thursday, February 11. This new transport facility is part of Sinaia's strategy to become the top ski resort in Romania.
The gondola lift, which links the city’s Cota 1400 to Cota 2000, is the most modern cable transport installation in Romania, according to a statement of the Sinaia City Hall.
It also sets several national records. Besides reaching the highest altitude in Romania (2,050 meters), it also passes 120 meters above ground in the Brazi Valley area, this being the greatest height reached by such a facility. Moreover, the new gondola lift goes up at a 45-degree angle on its first three segments, being the steepest such ascent.
The installation has 42 gondolas of eight seats each, and a transport capacity of 1,500 people per hour. The project required an investment of EUR 9 million, and the construction work has taken seven months. Romanian, Italian, and Austrian specialists have worked on this project.
“This is the last piece of an integrated ski area, the last step towards a single ski pass, which will offer access to all the ski slopes in our city,” said Vlad Oprea, the Mayor of Sinaia.
Up until now, the only way to get to Cota 2000 was the old cable car, which has a limited capacity.
“Romanian and foreign tourists will be pleased to learn about the single ski pass which, for a price of RON 140 (EUR 31), gives them access to 25 km of ski slopes and the three best performing installations in Romania: the gondola lift 1000-1400 and 1400-2000 sections and the Soarelui chairlift,” said Bogdan Falcescu, general manager of Sinaia Urban Transport company.
The opening of the new gondola lift will not change the ski pass tariffs set at the beginning of the 2015/2016 ski season.
Sinaia is a mountain resort in Prahova county. It is a popular destination for hiking and winter sports. Some of its tourists landmarks are Peles Castle, Pelisor Castle, and Sinaia Monastery. About 150,000 visitors, 30% of whom are foreigners, come to Sinaia every year.
