New Health Minister in Romania gets to run the piggy bank: National Health Insurance House

18 August 2011

Romania has a new Health Minister, Ritli Ladislau (in picture), who will also coordinate the activity of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS), the state body which collects the money from the population's health contributions. In the past, the National Health Insurance House was run independently from the Ministry, which has caused discontent among previous Health Ministers. They have been complaining about the inability to perform reforms without controlling the finances.

The new Health Minister will have to continue the reform and apply the measures agreed with the European Commission and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which include the minimum services package, the clawback tax and the national health card, the electronic prescription and the electronic health file for patients, among others.
