Romania’s new car pollution tax is effective as of today ( January 13 ), according to a statement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

The new tax is 25 percent lower than the amount paid in previous years, and for cars registered before 2007, it will be paid by the buyer at the first registration of the car under the new owner.

Romanians who have paid the higher tax starting July 2008 can claim the difference back.

The tax is calculated on several criteria, such as the type of engine, the capacity, the CO2 emissions and the state of the car.
