Only one bidder for Bucharest-Brasov motorway

28 March 2019

Chinese - Turkish consortium CCCC - Makyol is the only one of the five investors to bid in the new stage of the tender for the implementation of the EUR 1.36 billion Public-Private Partnership arrangement for the Ploiesti-Brasov motorway, sources familiar with the matter told Economica.net.

The financial arrangement for this partnership will be a build-operate-transfer (BOT), with the highway to be transferred into state ownership after 24 years. The project is supposed to be the first public-private partnership project in Romania.

The procedures for the project were launched and are handled by the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis (CNSP). Initially, five investors submitted offers for the public-private partnership contract for the Ploiesti-Brasov motorway. Swiss, Austrian and Spanish construction companies were among the prospective bidders, beside the Chinese - Turkish consortium.

The private partner will collect the money from the tolls paid by drivers, and the government will top up this amount to secure full reimbursement of funds to the private investor according to the schedule. Drivers traveling from Bucharest to Brasov on the motorway will pay a tax of EUR 6.3 per 100 km.
