One in four Romanians is obese, study shows

01 September 2014

One in three Romanians is overweight and one in four is obese, according to a recent study conducted by Eurostat. Only 10% of the 3.5 million Romanians that suffer from obesity go to a medical exam and only 1% of them are included in a national program against obesity.

According to specialists in eating disorders and obesity, the main causes of this health problem are poor nutrition, stress and lack of exercise.

“People who are overweight or obese should first make their regular medical tests and see one specialist or more (nutritionist, psychologist), depending on the nature of the obstacle that person faces, in order to solve the problem,” according to Romanian psychologist Ileana Iliescu, specialized in eating disorders and nutrition.
