June 1 mini-break: Workshops, circus & theatre shows for children at Open Streets event in Bucharest

The “Open Streets - Bucharest, Urban Promenade” event also marks the June 1 mini-break this year with various open-air events and activities for children and adults alike, in the city’s Rahova neighbourhood and on Calea Victoriei.

Held on weekends until October, Open Streets closes venues and streets in the capital city to vehicle traffic, turning them into pedestrian-only zones. According to Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan, last year, over 700,000 Bucharesters participated in this project that involved 1,000 artists and 800 events organized on 35 pedestrian streets.

This week, the project sets up two pedestrian zones in Bucharest: Bârcă Street (between Calea Rahovei and Mărgeanului Street) on June 1-4 from 10:00 to 22:00 and Calea Victoriei (between Victoriei Square and Splaiul Independenţei) on June 3-4 between 10:00 and 22:00.

The organizers announced a varied program for the edition held on Bârcă Street, in the city’s Rahova neighbourhood. It includes creative and face painting workshops, children's theatre shows with actors from the Ion Creangă and Excelsior Theaters and the Bucharest Metropolitan Library, artistic moments of the Bucharest Metropolitan Circus, meetings with the living statues of the Masca Theater, and pop concerts, dance, percussion and rhythm shows of the Bucharest School of Art.

Meanwhile, on Calea Victoriei, for the first time at the Open Streets, the National Museum of Romanian Literature will open its the garden on the morning of June 3 for creative workshops for children. Elsewhere on Calea Victoriei, Ţăndărică Animation Theatre and Bucharest Metropolitan Circus will entertain the juniors with their special shows, Masca Theatre will present a show about Romania's history, and the Bucharest City Museum will await visitors at the Filipescu-Cesianu House with exhibitions of urban anthropology and frescoes recovered during the demolition of the Văcărești Monastery.
