Opera and Athenaeum concerts to celebrate King Michael of Romania's 90th birthday in October

05 September 2011

A concert celebrating Romanian king Michael (Mihai) of Romania's 90th birthday will be held on October 25 at the National Opera in Bucharest, gathering royalties across Europe, according to Prince Radu, King Mihai's son in law. This will be preceded by a concert at the Romanian Athenaeum on October 24, when a royal lunch will also be organized at the National Bank of Romania headquarters.

The events are yet to be advertised on the Opera and the Athenaeum's websites.

Following a recent decision, the Royal House in Romania will no longer be called The House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, but the Royal House of Romania. The members of the Royal Family will also give up all their titles given by the heads of the Hohenzollern royal family.

The House of Hohenzollern is one of the most important dynasties in Europe. The Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen is a wing of the Hohenzollern dynasty. Kings Carol I (1881-1914), Ferdinand I of Romania (1912-1921), Mihai I (Michael) of Romania (1927-1930 and 1940-1947) and Carol II of Romania (1930-1940) are part of this dynasty.

Romania is currently a parliamentary republic. Its president is Traian Basescu and its prime minister, Emil Boc.
