Opposition party protest in Bucharest today. See traffic restrictions

19 January 2012

The Social Liberal Union (USL) in Romania, the main opposition party in the country, is organizing a protest in Bucharest today (January 19). About 10,000 people across the country are expected to come to the capital city.

As a result, the road traffic in Bucharest will be restricted between 14:00 and 19:00 on Kiseleff Blvd. between the Triumphal Arch and Victoriei Square, as well as on intersecting streets. The only exception will be Ion Mincu Blvd. where the traffic will be closed gradually, depending on the number of participants.

The protests started in Romania mid-last week, after the resignation of Raed Arafat, Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health, on the proposed health law. The protests soon turned against Romanian President Traian Basescu, demanding his and the Government’s dismissal and early elections. Meanwhile, Arafat returned to the Health Ministry on the same position.

The USL announced Monday ( January 16 ) its intention to organize protests.
