Orange Romania opens up WiFi hotspot network for all mobile telephony users

26 March 2014

Telecom operator Orange Romania has granted free access for any mobile telephony users to its internet hotspots for two hours, and unlimited access for Orange users, the company has announced.

Using a password that arrives via text message, mobile users will be able to connect to the Internet via Orange's WiFi hotspots across Romania. The system uses the Passpoint technology, which grants access without a user and password, but rather via de SIM card.

Users who have mobile phones compatible to this technology – iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy S5 – can connect automatically and securely to any Orange hotspot if they choose SSID Orange Mobile Wi-Fi.

Those who do not have mobile phones compatible with Passpoint but which can run the protocol EAP-SIM/AKA can connect if they manually choose this type of authentication the first time they access the WiFi hotspot, Orange explained. To connect to the network, choose the Orange WiFi hotspot from the list of WiFi connections available, fill in your phone number in the field that pops up, and then introduce the password you will receive by text message, or go directly to the link received via SMS.

The list of phones compatible with the latter is here.

Orange's WiFi zones are located in hotels, restaurants, bars, mall, supermarkets, in seaside and mountain resorts, and downtown Bucharest and Sibiu. A map of WiFi hotspots from Orange Romania is available here.

Romanian telecom and cable services provider RCS RDS has over 2,400 WiFi hotspots across Romania for its subscribers of Internet services.
