Over 1,200 basketball players expected at Wizz Air Sport Arena Streetball competition in Bucharest this June
Wizz Air Sport Arena Streetball, the main 3×3 basketball competition in Romania, will take over the street in Bucharest June 21 and June 23 this year,in Constitutiei Square. Lithuania’s Seoul 1988 champion Sarunas Marciulionis and Spanish Beijing 2008 silver medalist Jorge Garbajosa are the special guests of this year’s edition.
A total of eight 3x3 basketball courts will be placed in Constitutiei Square and over 1,200 players are expected to take part in the competition, in four age categories - under 14, under 18, over 18 and over 35 years, men and women. The best 3x3 basketball teams will play in the Elite category and the winning team will represent Romania at the 2013 EuroTour final in Budapest this September.
The Wizz Air Sport Arena Streetball competition will be observed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Programme Commission member Walter Sieber.
The competition will also be supported by Romanian Olympic medalists, such as Sydney 2000 fencing champion Mihai Covaliu, the most decorated rower in the history of the Olympics, winning five golds, two silvers and one bronze - Elisabeta Lipa, boxing bronze medalist Leonard Doroftei and three-time handball medalist Stefan Birtalan.
Since its start in 2005, the Wizz Air Sport Arena Streetball competition, each time attracted more than 1,000 teams, 4,000 players and 15,000 spectators. Find more information about the competition here.
