Over 18 mln Romanians to vote in local elections on Sunday, 37,700 foreigners also expected at ballot box

Romanians will cast their vote on Sunday ( June 10 ) to choose their local representatives – mayors, local or county counselors and heads of county councils. In total, over 44,000 Romanians will have be installed in public office after the Sunday local elections.

Around 18.3 million Romanians are expected to vote on June 10, and 80 million ballot papers were printed for them. In Bucharest, 7.9 million ballot slips were printed with a budget of EUR 85,000. In Romania, voters stamp the names of the chosen candidates on the ballot paper.

Foreigners from the European Union who have their permanent residence in Romania can also vote in the local elections. In total, 37,700 registered foreigners can vote on Sunday, most of them from Italy – 8,800, Germany – 5,100 and France – 4,100. They can only vote in the city/district or administrative subdivision where their residence is. Those who changed their residency to a new locality can vote there only if they changed their residency at least three months before the elections, meaning by March 10 2012.

In order to vote, they will have to show their national ID card, temporary ID card, diplomatic passport or work passport or military service papers for students in military schools.
