Around 4.6 million calls were made to the emergency number 112 in the third quarter of this year in Romania and only 31.7 percent of them were real, while the rest were hoaxes. Over 1,450 Romanians who called 112 to stage a hoax have been sanctioned so far, according to the Special Telecommunications Service (STS).

The general emergency number 112 became functional in 2005 in Romania. Calls to this number are free and it can be reached from all landline or mobile telephony networks, even when the telephone's keypad is locked.
