Romanian plastic surgeons performed breast implants  on over 4,000 women last year, according to the first statistics made by the Association of Plastic Surgeons in Romania. Most of the women got silicone implants.

Only 3% of the women who have requested this intervention actually needed it for medical reasons, reports local Economica.net. Specifically, only 120 women benefited last year from breast reconstruction after mastectomy, and more than 3,900 got breast implants for aesthetic reasons.

The average price of a silicone breast implant stays between EUR 2,700 and EUR 2,800, according to market sources.

Compared to other countries, Romania is still a small market for breast implants. For example, 320,000 women get breast implants in the US annually, 230,000 in Brazil, 55,000 in Germany, 39,000 in Spain, and 30,000 in the UK.

Some 200 doctors practice plastic surgery in Romania.
