Owners of .ro domains will have to pay an annual tax of EUR 6 for the maintenance service starting March 1, next year.

The National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics (ICI) has approved the introduction of this tax, reports local Agerpres.

The.ro domain owners will be able to pay the tax for minimum one year and maximum ten years. The annual tariff doesn’t include the VAT.

According to ICI, Romania is currently the only country in Europe that hasn’t yet introduced an annual maintenance fee for Internet domains.

The total number of IPs allocated to Romanian organizations in 2016 was 7.5 million, down from 8.9 million in 2015. So far, in order to buy a .ro domain, one had to pay a one-off fee, which granted domain ownership for life.
