(P) English Improv Comedy Show by Improvisneyland - July 27th
Improv comedy is on the rise in Bucharest. It’s rapidly becoming a cultural and entertaining trend, attracting a segment of young, dynamic, well-educated and driven spectators. There are more than 10 improv groups in Bucharest, but up until now, nobody dared create an English language improvisation show, for expats.
Improvisneyland, one of the most enduring improv groups in Romania, started a series of monthly improv games shows, this year in June.
The group composed of professional actors is creating short, fun, captivating scenes and intriguing characters on the spot, with no script, costumes or sets.
Imagine a young actor coming on stage with all eyes on him and nothing prepared. Nothing to think about but the suggestion from the audience: a headline, a place, a word… What can he do to be interesting, original and funny? The possibilities are infinite and that’s the beauty of it. Soon, another improviser steps alongside and says something. Just enough to get the role playing started. A whole new world is revealing to the actors and the public, at the same time - the relationships between the characters, their views on life, their choices, the status negotiation and the spontaneous punchlines are all new and surprising.
The audience becomes the director by offering suggestions and the actors are engaged in unique, out of the box games and situations that will only be played once and never repeated again. Nothing is rehearsed and all the lines are created from the top of their minds, right then and there.
Charming, theatrical, hilarious! You might know the format from the popular TV show „Whose Line is it Anyway”.
Improvisneyland is composed of professional actors with international experience. The group performed at the Chicago Improv Festival and at TILT - Tallinn International Improv Festival in 2015 and this autumn is performing at Goteborg Improv Festival.
Monica Anastase, one of the actors in the group, is the founder and Artistic Director of the first and only National Improvisation Theatre Festival in Romania - !MPRO - which has reached its fourth edition this year.
The group was founded in 2008 and has performed over 800 shows since. The idea came from Axel Moustache, a professional actor you can see at the National Theatre in Bucharest (TNB). He started pitching the improv genre to fellow actors and some of them understood it’s one of the most challenging and rewarding types of drama out there, so they rallied up. And so the magical seven actors’ formula was created.
Come to Club 99, one of the best comedy clubs in the city, on 99 Dacia Boulevard, in Bucharest. New location: Ceainaria ARTea, on 1 Amiral Vasile Urseanu Street in Bucharest.
