Peasant fortress in Romania’s Saschiz to undergo EU funded restoration
The 14th century peasant fortress in the Saschiz commune, in Mures county, in Transylvania, will be restored with EU funding. The value of the non-refundable funding is of over EUR 1.8 million, to which the local authorities’ own contribution of EUR 52,000 is added.
The restoration work is needed as the walls of the fortification have deteriorated in recent years.
“Over the past years, the degradation of the walls of the fortress has become more acute, endangering the safety of tourists. There is a risk that this historical monument, important not only for the local community but also for the national cultural patrimony, could be destroyed,” the Saschiz City Hall says.
The peasant fortress in Saschiz a class A historical monument. It is a defensive fortress, which served as refuge for the locals in case of invasions. It was also used for the storage of food, as it provided the needed temperature.
The vessel-shaped fortress stands on a 5,000 sqm surface. Its construction started in 1347. It is part of the Saschiz rural site, an UNESCO patrimony monument, for the Saschiz fortified church.
