Penny Market opens first logistics center in eastern Romania
Local supermarket chain Penny Market, operated by German REWE Group, has invested EUR 19 million in a logistic center near Bacau. This is the first such center opened by a food retailer in Romania’s Moldova region, in the east of the country.
The logistic center is located in the village of Nicolae Balcescu, Bacau county. It covers over 19,000 sqm and serves 45 Penny Market supermarkets in the region. The warehouse created over 150 jobs, and a part of the employees are from the city of Bacau.
“The project is part of our strategy to develop Penny Market’s national distribution network and comes in addition to our two existing centers in Bucharest and Turda,” said Daniel Gross, general manager REWE Romania.
The complex was developed by the Cluj-Napoca branch of KÉSZ Holding Zrt. It is built on a plot of about eight hectares.
The retailer entered the local market in 2005. It currently owns 200 stores at national level. In addition to that, six of the XXL Mega Discount stores, owned by REWE Romania, will be transformed in Penny Market stores this year.
Rewe Romania had sales of almost EUR 600 million and close to 3,500 employees in 2015, according to official data from the Finance Ministry.
