Police arrest 5 people from Bucharest for smuggling Ketamine

06 November 2012

Romanian police have arrested five young people from Bucharest for smuggling Ketamine, a class 3 controlled substance in Romania. The three men and two women aged between 24 and 31 were caught at Giurgiu, the border with Bulgaria, yesterday evening (November 25 ).

Between them, they were carrying five 50ml vials and one 25ml vial of Ketamine, reportedly hidden in their underwear. The Police have indicated that they would be detained for between five and 24 hours under charges of drug trafficking.

Ketamine produces dissociative anesthesia and is used on animals (horses) as well as occasionally on humans. It has some psychoactive effects and can cause hallucinations and has been used as a recreational drug. It became quite popular during the dance music explosion of the 1990s, but to a far lesser extent than MDMA (ecstasy).
