Romanian president signs law on Superior Magistracy Council’s organization
Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis promulgated on Thursday, October 4, the law on the organization and functioning of the Superior Magistracy Council (CSM), the organization that guards the independence of the judiciary in Romania.
This is the second of the three justice laws changed by the ruling coalition that the president promulgates after having exhausted all options to challenge them.
Iohannis said once again that he doesn’t agree with the changes included in these laws and asked the Parliament to restart the legislative process and include all the recommendations made by the Venice Commission, local News.ro reported. The Commission has so far issued only a preliminary opinion on these laws, warning that they may have negative effects on the local justice system and will present its full report and recommendations later this month.
However, justice minister Tudorel Toader is already working on an emergency ordinance to change the three justice laws according to the recommendations of the Venice Commission. He hasn’t officially presented the changes he plans to make yet.
