Romanian president signs law for combatting anti-Semitism
Romanian president Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law for combatting anti-Semitism.
The law sets jail sentences between 3 months and ten years for publicly promoting anti-Semitic ideas or doctrines and for setting up or joining anti-Semitic organizations. It sanctions hate speech or action against Jewish people, their properties or against institutions and places of worship belonging to Jewish communities.
ActiveWatch, an organization that promotes human rights in Romania, had asked the president not to sign this law, arguing that it doubles the existing legislation and has no real chance of being enforced, local Digi24 reported.
