Presidential elections: More Romanians vote abroad in second round

A total of 378,811 Romanians voted abroad during the second round of the presidential elections organized on November 16, more than double the number registered in the first round held on November 2 – some 160,000.

Most voters were registered in Italy, Spain, the Republic of Moldova, UK, the US, Germany and France, according to data from the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), cited by local Mediafax.

All 294 polling stations organized abroad sent BEC the voting results until Monday, November 17, 08:00 Romanian time. According to this data, most voters were registered in Italy – 96,724, Spain – over 83,000, the Republic of Moldova – over 35,000, UK – almost 26,000, the US – 17,710, Germany – 17,510, France – over 16,000, Belgium – some 13,000 and Austria – 9,565.

Over 6,400 Romanians voted in Canada, 4,852 in Denmark, almost 4,500 in Cyprus, over 3,800 in the Netherlands, 3,745 in Switzerland, 3,722 in Ireland, 3,451 in Greece and over 3,200 in Hungary.

Over 2,000 voters were also registered in Portugal, Luxembourg and the United Arab Emirates, while between 1,000 and 2,000 voters were reported in the Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden, San Marino, Australia, Israel and Slovakia.

Romania elected its president on Sunday, November 16. Klaus Iohannis, the mayor of Sibiu, won this year’s elections, beating Prime Minister Victor Ponta by a comfortable margin.
