Protests over attempts in Poland to break-up Romanian Roma camp
Human rights activists in Poland have been protesting after a request to break-up a Romanian Roma camp was submitted to a court in Polish city Wroclaw, according to a report on Polish Radio, quoted by local news agency Mediafax.
There are 60 people in the camp, including children, according to Radio Poland. The camp does not have access to running water and around 20 of those living there have not officially registered to reside in Poland.
Wroclaw City Hall made a court request in April to forcibly close the camp and relocate its inhabitants, but representatives from Amnesty International (AI) and the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights have opposed the move. The authorities say the camp's inhabitants will be moved to alternative housing. However, the president of Poland's Roma association Roman Kwiatkowski wrote an open letter to Wroclaw City Hall, which describes rapidly growing anti-Roma sentiments in the area.
