Real Romania denies takeover rumors, says further expansion planned, including acquisitions
Retailer Real Hypermarket Romania, part of Metro group, has denied rumors about a potential sale of the Romanian subsidiary, which has been included in recent Romanian media reports. “There is no plan to sell the real,- Romania. Moreover, Metro Group trust in the development of the sales division of real,- on a promising market, with potential, and we will continue to strengthen our position on the local hypermarket segment,” said Joel Saveuse, member of the Metro AG board.
The retailer takes into account all opportunities to grow the business in Romania, according to Michel Lamoot, CEO real,- Hypermarket Romania. The growth will come either through sustained expansion, or through acquisitions. “Any comments on a potential takeover of real,- Hypermarket Romania are simple speculations and should be treated as such,” said Lamoot.
The Romanian media had previously reported on British retailer Tesco allegedly being close to making an acquisition and thus entering the Romanian market through acquiring Real Hypermarket Romania. Real,- Hypermarket Romania runs 25 stores in the country and is part of the German Metro group. The retailer entered the Romanian market in 2006.
