Record breaking number of visitors to Romania's coast over the weekend

16 July 2012

It was the biggest weekend yet at the Romanian seaside with more than 120,000 visitors recorded. According to figures from the local hospitality industry, more than 120,000 people looking for sun, sea and sand arrived between Friday ( July 13 ) and Sunday ( July 15 ). Occupancy rates reached 100 percent in the Mamaia, Eforie, Costineşti and Vama Veche resorts, according to Agerpres.

“There is no doubt that this season is turning out much better than last year's,” Vice President of the Romanian Tourism Employers Federation (FPTR) Dragos Raducan told Romanian news service Agerpres. More record breaking weekends are expected through July and August and local hotel owners are expecting to sell out regularly, according to reports in the Romanian press.

The FPTR VP also said that the season had had a difficult start as June's weather was changeable. However, Raducan also told Agerpres that there could be a downside to the record numbers; he expects overcrowding and negative comparisons to neighboring Bulgaria's beaches as a result.
